How Martial Arts Gave Me Lifelong Confidence & How It Can Help Your Child Too...
I remember I was in 2nd grade and just beginning my karate journey. My instructors always encouraged finding new ways to improve my confidence. There was a new confidence building opportunity with my school's Spelling Bee. I was nervous and didn't want to participate, but the school sent home the papers anyway.
I remember my mom practicing with me because she didn't want me to feel self-conscious & give up. So when I won 1st place in my class, I was so excited!

The problem was... now I had to stand on stage, in front of the ENTIRE school going against other winners. The day came and I was feeling extra nervous. When asked to spell "Myself" I ended up spelling
"M-y-s-e-f". . .
MYSEF?!
I remember walking off stage, completely bummed out, thinking "But I know how to spell it!"
As I was feeling terrible and beating myself up about the silly mistake, my mom ran up to me and told me how proud she was of me and that I succeeded. I was so confused at first...
She reminded me what I learned in Karate...that succeeding wasn't about winning,
it's about confidence...

The reason I succeeded was by even trying in the first place!
I could have gotten nervous and ran off stage but I had the confidence to stand and try.
After that I remember being excited to try again next year.
